Dear Literary Agent:
Enclosed are the first twenty pages of my fiction novel
I've seen variations of this sentence many times and, for me, it always functions as a red light. STOP! TAKE A DEEP BREATH! PROCEED WITH CAUTION! CHANCES OF A WELL WRITTEN NARRATIVE AHEAD ARE EXTREMELY UNLIKELY!
Ladies and gentlemen, there is no such thing as a fiction novel. If so, non-fiction novels would also have to exist, right?
Fiction means make believe.
Novel means make believe.
Non-fiction means the narrative is factual.
So, what you are you really saying to the agent?
